STEP: Starting life as the replacement for IGES, STEP development has pressed forward over the years to the point that it has been and remains the top neutral CAD format in use today. Sometimes you have no choice but to accept an IGES file in that case, make sure you have a tool that can repair bad geometry and stitch surfaces into watertight solids. Add to this that surface geometry is not only difficult to edit, but often has gaps between the surfaces that can make stitching the surfaces into a solid model impossible. Though IGES files can support solid models, they are almost always surfaces, and even if you had an IGES solid model, you'd need an IGES reader that can read it (and most will not). IGES: IGES ceased development over twenty years ago, yet remains the second most popular neutral format in a world that has otherwise progressed significantly.
